A Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP Sensor) is an essential part of the combustion process in an internal combustion engine. It measures the intake manifold pressure and provides this information to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). It gives the ECU the data it needs to calculate air density and determine the air-fuel mixture for the combustion process. This helps the ECU measure the engine load, fuel injection pulse and adjusts the ignition timing.
Aside from aiding the combustion process, a Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor can also diagnose throttle performance issues and it can be used to check for a vacuum leak in the intake manifold. It can also be converted into air mass data by using engine speed and Intake Air Temperature sensor data. For OBD II cars, it is used to test if the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is working properly. It is also used as a backup method for vehicles with a Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF Sensor) to monitor the EGR valve.
Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor failure can be caused by contamination, clogging, electronics damage due to intense engine heat, or vibration damage from prolonged exposure in the engine compartment. If a manifold absolute pressure sensor fails, the engine may not start or start poorly, cause misfires and detonations, have excessive fuel consumption, a lack of power and the check engine light could turn on.
