Automotive MAP Sensor |
3-Pin Automotive MAP Sensor with 0.5-4.5V Output Signal and 2 Ms Response Time
A manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor measures the pressure in the intake manifold. Usually located next to or on the throttle body, it transmits information about the intake manifold pressure to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). With this data, the ECU can work out the air density and accordingly adjust the air-fuel mixture amount for combustion. Besides, the ECU can also use this data to measure engine load, control the fuel injection pulse and adjust the ignition timing.
A MAP sensor also provides information for diagnosing potential issues with the throttle, detecting vacuum leak in the intake manifold, as well as converting the MAP signal into air mass data with the help of engine speed and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. Moreover, it is also used in OBD II cars to assess if the Exhaust Gas Recirculation or EGR valve is operational. When paired with a mass airflow sensor (measuring air density and volume)in some vehicles, the MAP sensor can be used as a backup to monitor the performance of the EGR valve.
Common causes of a failing MAP sensor include contamination, clogging and damages from exposure in the engine compartment. Symptoms of it may include lack of engine start or power, detonation or misfires, high fuel consumption, as well as Check Engine Light.
